Vario

Hi PTT - I like your contributions to the Variometer page. I did not know about those nifty digital output pressure transducers. I am a little concerned about differentiating the digital signal in software - don't think it would make a good vario. I guess we have to build it and test.

The variometer resolution from flytek variometers is 0.1 m/s, the SMD500 has a resolution of 0.25 m, which would make 0.25 m/s at 1 measurement per second, if averaged over a few seconds this could be increased. Also it may be possible to take measurements at a higher rate, since one measurement takes 34 ms from what I understand from the specs. I bet building and testing is the best way to find out, it wouldn't be that hard with only one chip to be added. PTT 21:05, 15 August 2007 (CEST)

I have a Flytec 4020 - I just played with it a bit. It registers vertical speed when you move it 10cm up or down - amazing. That means they must differentiate the analog signal or use very high resolution for the pressure signal. I do not think we want to replace our variometers with Openmoko devices - just have a device to share data within a group of pilots. You are right - we should probably start with a one chip solution and see how good we can get it. Johan 18:19, 16 August 2007 (CEST)
