From Openmoko

Jump to: navigation, search

Having had a Motorola A780, which is Linux based (2.4.20 + perhaps some extensions), since 2005 and that I really thought would have been a great platform to base an open mobile phone on, I have been very excited about the Neo1973 since I heard about it in February 2007.

If the build environment can be made very easy to setup, so that even the poorest of people can start making/fixing applications for it, then I think success is assured.

The slow steamrolling of Linux in the general computing field is going to happen with open platforms like OpenMoko, even though it may not be OpenMoko that takes the cake. RedHat has taken a big chunk out of the desktop/server space, but for OpenMoko to succeed they will have to work hard (just like RedHat did) to capture mobile-device-interested develoopers.
