Talk:GPS Navigation

From Openmoko

In my opinion it is important to support commercial navigation software as well. Normal users need that feature very often and will not buy a phone including gps lacking navigation software. I don't know but it will take a lot of time untill openstreemaps or other open services will be able to compete with commercial maps. --denis_std 21:35, 14 July 2007 (CEST)

We can't. They have the source, they can port it. Stuff like qemu on the phone is not a solution, nor is the possibility of running unlicensed stuff. From the mailing list, in March, someone quoting a reply. "Dear Mr. Beck,

Currently TomTom has no plans to extend our navigation software to other platforms. However the Openmoko is an interesting development and we will keep an eye on it to see how this project evolves into the future.

With kind regards,

The TomTom PRO support team

Support can come in many forms. OpenMoko already "supports" any developer that wants to write software, be it commercial or free. But for serious commercial projects, you either have to be able to justify return on investment or it won't fly. For something like TomTom to be interested, they want to know how many software packages they will sell, at what price, and what the porting cost will be. If porting costs more then the software they sell, it won't be viable.
I do like paragon's suggestion about waypoints ... maybe there would be a way to automate this, so you can build a breadcrumb trail of routes? (dunno, just brainstorming here). Historybuff 23:09, 14 July 2007 (CEST)

Openstreetmap may help. This is a perhaps-poorly named - position logging application. It's targetted at the moment at openstreetmap, but it would basically do all tagging you might want as well as track logging. --Speedevil 23:35, 14 July 2007 (CEST)

There should be possibility to add current position to existing/new contact. --Krzysiekbielicki 10:33, 19 July 2007 (CEST)

Would it be possible to use the TomTom maps? --Yorick 10:33, 19 July 2007 (CEST)
