OpenMoko Snapshot Review Criteria

Boot

  • First Boot Speed - Approx. 3m14.596s (About 4 seconds longer than 19 March 2008)
  • Second Boot Speed - Approx. 1m56.196s (About 1m 16.4s faster than first boot)
  • Error Messages - None
  • Failures - X shows a gray screen (similar to X --configure) for several seconds before loading. I did NOT see the "Please wait" load. Bug #1266 Reported (Quick Fix - SSH into your Neo and download This file and put it at /usr/share/pixmaps/xsplash.ppm).

Every 3rd boot, X fails to start and displays a console login which is meaningless with no keyboard.

Phone Functionality

Incoming Calls

  1. Can receive - Yes
  2. Kinetic alert (vibrate) - Yes
  3. Auditory alert (sound) - Yes.
  4. Missed calls display on OM-today2 - Yes
  5. Calls recorded in call log - Yes
  6. Stability - No issues noticable.

Outgoing Calls

  1. Can make - Yes
  2. Calls recorded in call log - Yes
  3. Stability - No issues noticed.

Call Quality

  1. Quality as heard from Neo - Good. Sound quality has improved signifigantly, reductions in GSM buzz, less ambient noise is picked up, slightly louder.
  2. Quality as heard from other - Good--. There is a noticable echo of the other person's voice on their own handset when calling a Neo. Bug #1267


Messaging Functionality

Incoming SMS

  1. Can receive - Yes

  4. Sender identified if applicable - Yes
  5. Is message readable - Yes

Contacts

Attempts to play videos results in black screen. Pressing power kills media player and occasionally causes screen flicker and "scrolling".

  1. Enabled by default: No

Bluetooth

  1. Can turn Bluetooth on - Via system tray, yes. Via Neod panel, no. Bug #1213 submitted]

Battery Life

No measured test.

Suspend

  1. Suspend works: Yes
  2. Resume via AUX works: Yes.
  3. Resume via POWER works: No. Some attempts cause the screen to light up and change color and device locks, requiring powerdown. Some restore the normal screen but freeze and power down after a few moments.
  4. All features work after suspend / resume cycle: No.
  5. Wake from suspend on incoming call: Partial. Screen lights up and displays changing colors as mentioned in the "resume via POWER".
  6. Wake from suspend on incoming SMS: No.

Software Keyboard

  1. Keyboard type - Multi-tap
  2. Displays correctly - Yes
  3. Usability - Poor. Multi-tap input's lack of CTRL keys harms terminal use. Without predictive input, too many key presses per line make this less than enjoyable to use. Also, the move from a landscape input to a portrait signifigantly decreases usability of many apps (like Contacts and Calendar). Additionally, the game "Solo" is un-playable since there is no way to call up the keyboard. Bug #1215 reported See also Switching Keyboards.
