which is a link to /sbin/init.sysvinit

init itself reads the /etc/inittab. The default runlevel is 5.

The runlevels are:

# Runlevel 0 is halt.
# Runlevel 1 is single-user.
# Runlevels 2-5 are multi-user.
# Runlevel 6 is reboot.

but first, init starts:

si::sysinit:/etc/init.d/rcS

which starts /etc/init.d/rc S which starts all links in runlevel S (Startup)
