Note that most of this is here already. Actually there is probably too much. A well known problem with main pages is link bubbling. All subgroups in an organisation want to have maximum exposure and be linked in the home page. Also there is a problem with top level navigation as the wiki logical structure is not clearly organized, but let's not wait for that to redesign the page. I don't have more time this evening, but the next step is to create a [[ProposedMainPageRedesign]] .

Revision as of 13:03, 31 July 2008

2008-07-30: Scott complained that

1. On the main page is a link for "Test cases", Why is this on the main page? Its useless to 90% of the users and should be under Development.

2. There is a "Software" link that leads you the "Developer Guide"??? WTF?

3. There is a "Hardware link" and the 1973 & FR links. Why? Both the 1973 & Fr pages have their respective hardware links on their pages. Its a classic misdirection.

The deeper issue

IMHO what this page needs is a clear purpose. Anybody willing to talk here about what and who this page is for ? Then we will be able to redesign. --MinhHaDuong 20:42, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Here are a few examples: [KDE] [Wikipedia]

I think the functions should be limited to:

1. Orient visitors, as a large fraction of them enter by this page (bookmarkability).

2. Announce news and upcoming events

Musts-have in the top part of the screen (above the fold): Page title, motto, objective project definition, product picture, search box, top level navigation within the wiki, welcome statement.

Must-have but not necessarily above the fold: links to other official information sources (trac, mailing lists, etc.), language chooser, more elaborated mission statement (historical overview and philosophical position)

Here is a ProposedMainPageRedesign . What do you think ?
