Openmokast is a digital broadcasting application that can use a USB DAB/DMB device to receive mobile multimedia services.

== Openmokast features ==

Openmokast can use a USB DAB/DMB receiver to receive and decode multimedia services. Currently the available services are:
* DAB audio (Musicam)
* DAB+ audio (AAC+ v2)
* MOT Slideshow
* Journaline

No compatible receiver is currently publicly available on the market but some manufacturer have been contacted in order to find one with which we can release the driver needed to control the hardware.

Currently the software can be used with a special file format that simulates a broadcast reception. Those files can be build using the online services available from http://mmbtools.crc.ca/.

Jmichel: added links to new openmokast page

I'm working in the Radio Broadcast Systems group at the Communications Research Center in Ottawa, Canada

We are the owner of two GTA01 kits (one base and one advanced) that we received in September 2007 but I just started to play with them in November 2007. My goal is to integrate broadcast applications and hardware to open telecommunication platforms such as OpenMoko and the Neo1973 phone.

This project was called [[Openmokast]] to represent the idea of Open Mobile Broadcasting. The first step is to port a software player for DAB/DMB radio and to use a USB DAB receiver on the Neo1973.

I'm usually on the #openmoko IRC channel (look for jmichel)

Other contributions:

== Where to find applications ? ==

Not all OpenMoko apps are listed on this wiki - there are much more [http://projects.openmoko.org/ projects at the Openmoko GForge] than the wiki can list, not to mention self-hosted applications on their own websites. Actually the phones can run most Linux based Free Software, using for example the [[Debian]] distribution. The [http://handhelds.freshmeat.net/browse/1038/ mobile phones section of Freshmeat] may be a interesting place to look.

== Where to publish applications ? ==

So you have just made this cool program, and wonder what will be an efficient way to share it ? Consider the following options:
* Adding a link in the [[Applications directory]] page.
* Creating a page on this wiki.
* Packaging for the [[Community Repository]].
* Hosting as a project on the [http://projects.openmoko.org/ Openmoko GForge]
* Entering a record on [http://freshmeat.net/ Freshmeat] or similar.
* Announcing on the [http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community community mailing list].

== Tips and Principles to develop and port applications ==

* All modifications are saved instantaneously, there should never be a save command.

* Make sure users can't make interface operation errors, or that the effects are easily reversible, instead of just notifying them of the potential consequences of their actions.

* When you open a document you should be returned to the place where you were working when you last closed or save it (this is our concept of sessions).

* Label buttons with adjectives, which describe the state of the object affected

* Designers should seek an efficient monotonous solution to gain benefits, including ease of learning, simplicity of implementation, minimization of documentation, and lowered maintenance costs.

* Whenever you find yourself specifying an error message, please stop; then redesign the interface so that the condition that generated the error message doesn't arise.

* If the user gets no utility from a process, there is no reason to tell them that it is happening.

* Provide unlimited levels of Undo and Redo whenever possible.

* Consider adding a Trash or Deleted Items area that has everything the user has deleted. The user’s data is the most important priority. Let’s make it hard for them to lose anything and easy to recover it.

* Reduce at the minimum the need for unused space: borders, intra-widgets distance.

* Although Openmoko is designed for smartphones that use a stylus, it would be foolish to expect people to only operate their handsets with stylus. For this reason, some core phone-related applications will be developed with finger (as opposed to stylus navigation) in mind.

This simple tool can be used to achieve some repetitive tasks without the need of the terminal. This is mostly useful to speedup the configuration of the phone or to execute the following tasks without the pen:
* Set fast charge mode
* Switch USB operation mode between host and device
* Set time
* Switch sound profile
* Set DNS configuration
* Enable Bluetooth hardware
* Scan Bluetooth devices
* Create a PAN networking connection with a BT device

The tool can be started from the "applications" menu. Some features are not implemented for the moment but some updates will be posted soon. The code will also be included after a cleanup. The tool is working with both versions of the kernel (2.6.22 and 2.6.24). In some cases it may fail to install because of unavailable dependencies. Before this problem is corrected, it is safe to install it using the -force-depends option of ipkg.

I've created a native openmoko gui application to display the gsm and gps information and log to a file.

gsmd only gives us operator name, signal strength and connection status. We cannot currently get band, but the app now shows Cell ID so we might be able to tell when we switch towers. gpsd didn't give me what I needed, so the program watches /dev/nmeaNP instead. You will need to launch gllin manually.

This simple tool can be used to achieve some repetitive tasks without the need of the terminal. This is mostly useful to speedup the configuration of the phone or to execute the following tasks without the pen:

The tool can be started from the "applications" menu. Some features are not implemented for the moment but some updates will be posted soon. The code will also be included after a cleanup. The tool is working with both versions of the kernel (2.6.22 and 2.6.24). In some cases it may fail to install because of unavailable dependencies. Before this problem is corrected, it is safe to install it using the -force-depends option of ipkg.

I'm working in the Radio Broadcast Systems group at the Communications Research Center in Ottawa, Canada

We are the owner of two GTA01 kits (one base and one advanced) that we received in September 2007 but I just started to play with them in November 2007. My goal is to integrate broadcast applications and hardware to open telecommunication platforms such as OpenMoko and the Neo1973 phone.

This project was called [http://openmokast.org/ OpenMokast] to represent the idea of Open Mobile Broadcasting. The first step is to port a software player for DAB/DMB radio and to use a USB DAB receiver on the Neo1973.

I'm usually on the #openmoko IRC channel (look for jmichel)

Other contributions:

As many of you are aware the GTA01's GSM 850 is non-functional at this time. This test was designed by many in the OpenMoko community (thanks to Michael Shiloh) to rectify the situation. A GTA01 was modified and will be shipped around North America and the results will be posted here.

:When running, gllin creates a log file already, so nmeaNP doesn't need to be reflected to /home/root. Also, running for about two hours will fill the available memory. We need to record the log files on flash if we want to run for more than a few minutes. I do not know how to turn off the logging of the nmea0183 messages from gllin. == The Executable ==

I've created a native openmoko gui application to display the gsm and gps information and log to a file.

gsmd only gives us operator name, signal strength and connection status. We cannot currently get band or cell ID (to tell when switching towers). Likewise, gpsd didn't give me what I needed, so the program watches /dev/nmeaNP instead. You will need to launch gllin manually before running openmoko-dashboard.
